Perioperative Ventilation: ICU Practices applied to the OR Online Learning
This web-based course provides clinicians with background information about ICU ventilation techniques that may be proactively applied intraoperatively to optimize gas exchange during the delivery of anesthesia. The program provides a brief history of mechanical ventilation, focusing on advances made in the last 50 years – many by those working in the field of anesthesiology. It includes a discussion of the modes of ventilation – full support and partial or assisted support – and how ventilation techniques once limited to the ICU are crossing over to the operating room. Also discussed are cardiopulmonary compromise and lung injury that may be linked to the use of mechanical ventilation and current recommendations to limit their development or progression.
